This move comes amid growing concerns over deepfaked images and videos, which have prompted politicians and regulators to draft proposals to prevent misleading AI-generated content from being used in campaign ads.

The symbol, referred to as an “icon of transparency,” is part of Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative and can be attached to content alongside metadata, establishing its provenance, including whether it was made with AI tools. The icon, which Adobe calls “Content Credentials,” is a small symbol embedded in a piece of content’s metadata.

The symbol is designed to be added via Adobe’s photo and video editing platforms like Photoshop or Premiere and eventually Microsoft’s Bing Image Generator. It will be added to the metadata of images, videos, and PDFs to announce who owns and created the data.

When viewers look at a photo online, they can hover over the mark, and it will open a dropdown that includes information about its ownership, the AI tool used to make it, and other details about the media’s production.

Adobe developed the symbol in collaboration with other companies as part of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), a group that aims to create technical standards to certify the source and provenance of content. Other members of the C2PA include Arm, Intel, Microsoft, and Truepic.

Andy Parsons, senior director of Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative, likens the symbol to a “nutrition label” of sorts, telling people the provenance of the media. The presence of the symbol is meant to encourage the tagging of AI-generated data, as it creates more transparency into how content was created.

Adobe first announced its Content Credentials feature in 2021 and made it available in the Photoshop beta last year. Content Credentials are also available on Firefly, the company’s generative AI art model, and are automatically added to art created with Firefly.

While the initiative has been praised for its potential to increase transparency, some critics question its effectiveness. Cosmo Wenman, an open access activist and design consultant involved in AI imagery and universal access research, called it “very weird” for companies that trade in digital imagery and provenance to propose that an icon, self-certified and appended to an image, could somehow assure authenticity.

Despite the criticism, Adobe and other companies in the C2PA plan to begin implementing the new symbol in the coming months. Microsoft, for example, has been using a custom digital watermark in content created with its Bing Image Generator but will be using the new icon soon.

Adobe isn’t the only company working on measures to provide ways to track the provenance of AI-generated content. Google has introduced SynthID, a content marker that similarly identifies AI-generated content within the metadata. Additionally, Digimarc has released a digital watermark that includes copyright information, aimed at tracking the use of data in AI training sets.

The introduction of Adobe’s new symbol represents a significant step towards ensuring transparency and authenticity in the digital world. As AI-generated content continues to proliferate, such measures will become increasingly important in helping users discern between real and AI-generated content.

In a bid to increase transparency and authenticity in the digital world, Adobe has introduced a new symbol to tag […]

[419,170

post-18833","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ai","category-news
["GET
