Google I/O is a yearly developer conference usually held for two days during May. The 2023 event is scheduled on May 10 to be held at the Shoreline Amphitheater, in Mountain View, California. It will be the first in-person conference since 2019. Due to the pandemic, Google I/O was canceled in 2020 while the one in 2021 was done online.

“I/O” stands for the computing term Input/Output as well as the conference slogan “Innovation in the Open.” The first Google I/O was held in 2008 and follows the format of the Google Developer Day which was first held a year earlier.

While the Developer Day was more of a marketing event, Google I/O is an update on the company’s software and hardware advances, technology breakthroughs, and new product releases. It normally involves Q&A forums, informative workshops and demos, and keynote speaker sessions.

While the lineup of activities is yet to be announced, this year’s event is expected to cover updates and presentations on the following:

  • Android 12 official beta announcement. The latest iteration of Google’s mobile OS is said to carry multi-tasking split screens, improved widgets on the home screen, and enhanced privacy features. The OS will roll out by end of the year so this will be an apt occasion for a preview.
  • Launch of the latest Pixel smartphone. This year’s Google I/O might see the official unveiling of the Pixel 5a. The 2019 event saw the launching of the Pixel 3a and the Pixel 4a was introduced last year. The newest Google smartphone might see an awaited reveal.
  • Google Assistant’s new capabilities. The latest features of the virtual assistant may be announced including increased integration with more Google products, enhanced voice recognition, and better memory aggregation, among others.
  • Developments in Google’s apps and services. Updates from the wide range of Google products and services are usually presented at this event. Of particular interest to web designers and developers is the latest on Flutter, Google’s user interface toolkit for apps that work flawlessly on web, desktop, and mobile.

Google I/O is open to everyone 18 years old and above. Registration is required (it started on March 7 and is free) to keep you informed of matters related to the event. A developer profile is also encouraged so you can receive interests and content recommendations. For more information, visit https://io.google/2023/.
