Google Play’s editorial team recently announced the winners of its Best of 2022 awards and the overall top placer went to, you read it right, an AI text-to-image generator app.

Dream by WOMBO prevailed among the winning apps and games spanning 20 categories in the U.S. There have been more than 100 million installs of the app as of this writing.

Made by Canadian artificial intelligence company WOMBO AI, it is available both on Google Play and Apple Store, and as a web platform Dream.ai.

It works similarly to other AI text-to-image generators – enter a prompt, pick an art style, and the AI will generate your painting in seconds. There are 15 art styles for the mobile app and 42 for the web app.

The app’s web version is free and doesn’t require a sign-up to download the images generated. For mobile apps, there are options for in-app purchases.

Dream by WOMBO is part of the wave of AI text-to-image generators alongside other apps like DALL-E, MidJourney, and Stable Diffusion that have gained immense popularity this year.

It gives virtually anyone the freedom and opportunity to create art even without having any artistic background or painting skills. It’s also actually a fun and engaging activity.

However, mainstream artists have raised concerns since AI draws upon established works and online images to come up with its creation, putting into question copyright issues.

Nevertheless, its massive following and wide usage has led even Google and Microsoft to introduce similar apps. Likewise, Canva, Picsart, and Adobe have followed suit, incorporating AI art tools in their design toolbox.
