Pantone unveiled its Color of the Year 2023 which is rooted from the red family of colors. Officially called Viva Magenta 18-1750, it is described as brave and fearless.

The color is a new animated red which “vibrates with vim and vigor.” Various attributes are associated with Viva Magenta including being a pulsating color and a boundary-less shade that makes a stand-out statement.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute made the following statement:

“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.

Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

Pantone has been declaring a particular Color of the Year since 2000 which is based on “zeitgeist.” The word is defined as a “general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era.”

There were two years where Pantone picked two colors for Color of the Year. The colors Rose Quartz and Serenity where chosen in 2016 while Ultimate Gray and Illuminating were selected in 2021.
