Google has implemented a new SafeSearch feature that automatically blurs explicit images, including violent and sexual content, in its search results for all users by default. This update is part of a larger initiative by Google to help users maintain control over their personal information, privacy, and online safety.
SafeSearch Feature Rollout
The new SafeSearch feature was first announced in February 2023 and was scheduled for a global rollout this month. The update is an expansion of Google’s Family SafeSearch, which was already the default setting for signed-in users under the age of 18. The feature helps filter out explicit content, such as pornography, violence, and gore when using Google to search for images, videos, and websites.
Adjusting SafeSearch Settings
Users who do not have a supervised account can adjust the SafeSearch setting at any time. Google spokesperson Charity Mhende explains that users will be able to change their SafeSearch setting after the feature launches in “the coming months,” allowing them to select between explicit content being blurred, filtered, or shown in their search results.
Additional Privacy and Safety Measures
In addition to the SafeSearch feature, Google has also announced updates to its “results about you” dashboard, making it easier for users to request the removal of their personal information or explicit imagery from search results. Furthermore, the company is making it easier for families to access parental controls directly from the search interface.
The introduction of the default blurring feature aims to help users avoid inadvertently seeing graphically violent or pornographic images while using Google’s search engine. With these updates, Google continues to prioritize user privacy and online safety, providing users with more control over the content they encounter while browsing the web.
