Everyone’s hopping on to the Instagram reels bandwagon. And why not? Instagram Reels are one of the most effective attention-grabbing tools right now. In fact, Reels get 22% more interaction than the standard video postings.
In case you didn’t know about Instagram Reels: Instagram, the photo-sharing app, came up with a new feature that lets the users create and share short videos (upto 90 seconds). The feature has been backed with lots of in-built filters and tools. And since its launch, Reels has only been gaining popularity with Instagram Algorithm loving it too!
But (and here comes the catch!) when you try to create one, the reality doesn’t match your expectations and you end up wondering ‘Dude, how do I do that?’ Well, (and since you asked so nicely) here we are sharing the 4 most underrated Instagram Reel editing hacks to give it (and you) the pro feel.
Let’s go!
1. Putting GIFs for a part of the Instagram reel
Did you know that you can insert GIFs for only a part of the reel? This is really helpful when you want to have a WOW factor in your reel. Here’s how you can do it:
- After tapping the Instagram reels icon, select the video you want to make the reel with and then click ‘Add’.
- Next, click the sticker icon on the top of the screen. Select ‘GIF’. This will give you multiple GIF options. Select the one that you want to add to your reel. You can increase or decrease the size of the GIF by pinching in and out on the GIF.
Pro Tip: You can search for a GIF with the help of the search bar. For example: if you want to include flowers GIF, simply type ‘Flowers’ in the search bar.
- Once you have done this, you will see a small thumbnail of the GIF you place on the bottom left corner of the screen. Tap on it to open the GIF timeline.
- Adjust the time from when you want the GIF to appear and disappear from the screen.
- Repeat this process to add multiple GIFs to your reel.
2. Controlling the camera audio and the background audio of your Instagram Reel?
You don’t want to miss out on the trending music in your reel, but you want your voice to be louder than the trending music in your Instagram reel. Here’s how you can do it:
- After selecting the trending for your reel, tap on the music icon on the top of your screen.
- Increase the volume of the camera audio from the camera audio bar.
- Do not forget to drop the volume of your trending music from the other volume bar.
Pro Tip: You can also record your voice using the mic. Tap on the mic icon, then adjust the time on the timeline from where you want your voice-over, hold on to the record button and start recording yourself. Click on ‘Next’ once you are done with the recording.
3. Changing the Instagram reel cover AFTER posting it
Let’s face it. There will be times when you are just not happy with the reels that you have already posted. But what if you could edit them even though they have already been published? Let’s check out how to do that:
- Open the Instagram app and tap on the profile icon on the bottom right-hand side. Here you’ll be able to see all the reels you have published. Tap on the reel you want to edit.
- Next, tap on the 3 dots in the top right corner of the screen. This will open a menu. Select the ‘Edit’ option. From here, you can change the caption, tag products, tag people, etc.
- You can tap on the cover image and from here you can add a fresh image or video from your gallery.
- Keep in mind that you won’t be able to change the audio or music associated with the reel. This option is not yet available. As a workaround, you can re-publish the same reel with an audio of your choice.

4. Converting your story highlight into an Instagram reel
You know how you have meticulously stored your influences in the highlight section. The problem is no one ever goes to your highlights to check them out. Here’s an interesting way to revamp your highlights to grab your audience’s attention.
- In the Instagram app, tap on your profile and go to your highlights. Tap on the highlight you want to recreate as a reel.
- Next, tap on the three dots in the bottom right corner of your screen. This will open the ‘More’ section.
- Tap ‘Convert to Reel’ and from here you can edit the highlight just like a fresh new reel. This means you can add audio or change the reel cover, anything you like. Once done, tap ‘Next’.
- Now, click on ‘Edit Clips’ and then on the plus (+) sign to add clips from your gallery or record one right away.
- Next, trim off the unwanted portions of the reel on the timeline.
Pro tip: Tap on the ‘Transitions’ to make the switch from one clip to another seamless.
- Tap on the ‘Reorder’ button to adjust the ordering of your reel.
- Click on ‘Done’, then add a caption, hashtag, and the works. Next, tap on ‘Share’ to publish the reel.
